SHERBROOKE, Que. -- Calgary Dinos Amonn Nelson and Sam Effah were named the Canadian university track athletes of the year Thursday. Nelson earned the womens award after breaking a pair of 26-year-old records to win both sprint events at the Canada West championship. Nelson, a fifth-year sprinter, set a record in the 300 metres at 37.89 seconds, then ran a record 7.51 in the 60 metres. Effah won the award for the fourth consecutive year after breaking his own record in the 60 metres, running 6.59 at the Canada West championship. Effah competed for Canada at the Commonwealth Games in India last October, and won the 100 metres at the Canadian track and field championships. Saskatchewans Taryn Suttie won the female award for field events after winning every Canada West shot put event she entered. Jeremy Eckert took the mens field award for Regina, winning gold medals in high jump and the pentathlon as well as a bronze in long jump at the Canada West championships. Montreals Laurence Beaudet, who is ranked first the CIS in long jump and third in 60-metre hurdles, was named female rookie of the year.
