He finally got an opening as he earned a match

DALLAS -- O. Corey Crawford Jersey.J. Mayo had Denver beat with a tie-breaking 3-pointer late in regulation. The mistake-prone Dallas guard gave the Nuggets another chance to set a franchise record in wins with a turnover in the final seconds, so he had to hit another go-ahead shot from long range in overtime. Dirk Nowitzki scored 22, Mayo overcame his huge mistake with his first 20-point game in more than a month, and the Mavericks denied the Nuggets their 55th win with a 108-105 overtime victory on Friday night. The Mavericks were up by two when they inbounded to Mayo -- their turnover leader this year -- with 10 seconds left in regulation. He tried to dribble through traffic but lost the ball to Andre Miller, who found Corey Brewer for a tying layup with 3.9 seconds remaining. "Youve just got to understand theres still more game left," said Mayo, who surprisingly got all the way to rim after the bucket by Brewer but missed a layup at the buzzer. "You cant really sit there and dwell on turning the ball over. They made the play at the end, and I thought we made more plays in overtime to get the win." Mayo scored the first five Dallas points in the extra period, including a 3-pointer from the left wing for a 104-101 Dallas lead with 2:40 remaining. The Mavericks, playing two nights after getting eliminated from the playoff race for the first time since 2000, then held on in a frantic final minute. Mayo was 5 of 7 from long range and finished with 20 points, his most since scoring 22 against Detroit on March 8. Vince Carter had 22 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Brewer, Wilson Chandler and Andre Iguodala led the Nuggets with 18 points apiece, and Kenneth Faried had 11 points and 10 rebounds. The loss kept Denver at 54 wins, which the Nuggets have reached twice previously. The last time was with Carmelo Anthony leading the way in 2008-09, when the Nuggets beat the Mavericks in five games in the second round of the playoffs. The Nuggets lost their last chance to finish as the No. 2 seed and will remain in a battle for home court in the first round with Memphis and the Los Angeles Clippers over their final three games. "Im not going to overreact to anything other than we have three games left," Denver coach George Karl said. "I think we all want third. But if we get fourth or fifth, weve had a helluva year and well get ready to go play in the playoffs." While the Mavericks will miss the post-season for the first time since Nowitzkis second year, they can get back to .500 for the first time since December with a win Sunday at New Orleans. That would also mean the bearded German and several Dallas veterans can shave after vowing two months ago not to do it until they reached the break-even mark. "Honestly, I try to play the end of the season out strong and win the next game for coach," said Nowitzki, who scored 16 in the first half. "Once I go out there, its fun. I try to win and go out there and compete." Dallas was nursing a 106-105 lead when Brewer was called for a foul on Nowitzki with 0.5 seconds on the shot clock and 6.1 seconds left in the game. The Mavericks threw a long inbound pass to Darren Collison, who avoided being fouled until there were just 1.9 seconds left. Collison hit both free throws and Iguodala was short on a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer. "Its amazing," Karl said after a long pause when asked about the foul call against Brewer. "There are a lot of things about that game. We didnt get a foul call that whole third quarter. We were driving to the basket on almost every possession. Not one foul." Denver point guard Ty Lawson returned after missing five games with a right plantar fasciitis tear, but didnt play half of the fourth quarter and overtime because he was limited to 20 minutes. He scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and finished 13. "I got three weeks of rest, but Ive got to get back into game shape," Lawson said. "I didnt feel like I was tired out there or anything, but I need to get back to teammates getting used to me. Theyve been playing a different style since Ive been out." After Mayo put Dallas ahead 99-96 with a 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation, Miller was fouled on a drive and the referees ruled goaltending against Brandan Wright before overturning the call on video review. Miller missed the second free throw, and Mayo found Wright, who was fouled as he barely missed a layup. Wright missed both free throws, but Iguodala, who hit a game-winning layup to beat the Mavericks in Denver and was coming off a triple-double against San Antonio, missed a contested jumper before Mayos turnover gave Denver another chance to tie. NOTES: Nowitzki finished 10 points shy of 25,000 for his career. He should become the 17th NBA player to reach the milestone Sunday at New Orleans. Jerry West is 16th at 25,192 points. Nowitzki is third among active players behind Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. ... The Nuggets won all five games that Lawson, their leading scorer, missed with his foot problem. That included almost three full games without Danilo Gallinari, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee early in a home game against the Mavericks last week. Gallinari had a career-high 39 points at Dallas in December. Mavericks C Elton Brand returned after missing four games with a strained right calf. MASON, Ohio -- Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer won their opening matches at the Western & Southern Open in straight sets Wednesday, getting accustomed to the heat after spending the last two weeks in London and Canada. Djokovic got the bronze medal at the Olympics in London, then won the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Sunday night. He was a little off in his opening set on a court baked in sunshine and 86-degree heat, before pulling away from Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-6 (4), 6-2. "Sometimes its really hard to try to stay fit for every single tournament and try to perform your best," Djokovic said. "I mean, in the last three, four weeks, I have changed three different cities, places, surfaces, conditions. Im still trying to figure out where I am." Murray had the best moment of his career at Wimbledon, winning the Olympic gold on home soil. He had to withdraw from the Rogers Cup because of a sore knee, which he blamed on the transition from grass to hard courts. Murray, the defending champion in Cincinnati, moved around the court well during his 6-2, 6-4 win over Sam Querrey. The American repeatedly missed open shots while falling behind and managed only two break points during the match, both of which Murray saved. "It felt fine," Murray said of his knee. "I moved well today. It still was giving me a little bit of trouble in practice for a couple of days before the tournament, but it felt fine, much better on the court today. I moved well, so Im hoping it wont be a problem." Federer had no trouble in his evening match against Russias Alex Bogomolov, winning 6-3, 6-2 in exactly one hour. He served 12 aces and didnt face a break point until the final game of the match. Federer skipped the Rogers Cup, so it was his first match back on a hard court. "Its nice to be back on the hard courts," Federer said. "I served really well. He struggled to get into some rallies." On the womens side, top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland also advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden. Venus Williams moved on with her second three-set victory in two days. Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan quit her match while trailing in the second set, overcome by the heat, and also dropped out of her later doubles match. Radwanska, who received a first-round bye, felt a little rusty. "The first match is always more difficult, with the different balls and conditions," she said. "I was happy to get through it, especially since it was very hot. Hopefully, Ill better (Thursday)." Radwanska, who lost to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final and is ranked No. 3 in the world, will meet Sloane Stephens of the United States, who got into the tournament as a wild card. "Ill just go out and play my game," Stephens said, adding with a smile, "Im not going to tell you how Im going to play, because shell probably read this and know how to play." Venus Williams won the gold medal in doubles with her sister in London and arrived for the tournament in suburban Cincinnati upbeat. She needed three sets and 2 hours, 23 minutes to win her opening match Tuesday, then followed it with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russias CChanelle Scheepers in the afternoon heat that lasted an hour and 46 minutes. Bobby Hull Jersey After Scheepers long return ended it, Williams briefly raised her arm in celebration, walked slowly to the net to shake hands, and sat down and rubbed her forehead with both hands. Eleventh-seeded Dominka Cibulkova withdrew with an injury after losing the first set in a tiebreaker against qualifier Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic. Chinas Shuai Peng also advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Roberta Vinci of Italy. In mens action, Canadian Milos Raonic struggled for more than two hours before finally overcoming former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Western & Southern Open. The 21-year-old got out of trouble repeatedly with his serve, which produced 22 aces. He had 12 Tuesday night when he opened with a victory over Rogers Cup finalist Richard Gasquet. Raonic improved to 2-0 over the recently married Baghdatis after beating the Cypriot last October at an indoor tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., hit 46 winners, and broke Baghdatis for a 5-4 lead in the final set. But he had trouble finishing out the win, and had to save three break points in the next game. He finally got an opening as he earned a match point and finished the job on a Baghdatis error. Baghdatis was treated for a back and hip problem in the second set, but didnt seem to affect his play. Raonic saved all six of the break points he faced and he profited from 33 Baghdatis errors. "It was hot and maybe the ball was just going through the court a little bit quicker, but I started off the match not playing aggressive enough," said Raonic. "I started playing too flat, just to the way he likes, and then I was sort of figuring out a few points here and there. "I didnt really have a solution consistently throughout the match, so that sort of made it difficult." Raonic, ranked a career-high 19th in the world, next faces Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, a regular in the ATP top 10. The two have never played each other before. "Were both going to be going for our shots," said the Canadian, "For myself, on my serve its going to be a priority to really try to dictate as much as possible; on the returns, just sort of make him try to play as much as possible and hopefully create some opportunities with it." No. 10-seeded Mardy Fish of the United States advanced to the third round by defeating Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 6-3, 6-1. Serbian Victor Troicki moved on to the third round with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Australian Lleyton Hewitt. Nikolay Davydenko of Russia beat Florian Meyer of Germany 6-3, 6-3. Fish was happy to advance relatively easily against an unfamiliar opponent while still working back into form after a surgical procedure to correct a heart condition in May. "It was nice to get on and off quickly, especially with a win," said Fish, whod never played Berlocq in singles. "You also can get on and off quickly with a loss. Its somewhat tricky. You never know what to expect. I played as well today as I have all summer. Hes a good player. If youre not on top of your game, you could be in trouble." ' ' '

I was happy with that line

All thats left is the waiting. William Perry Jersey. Team Canadas national junior team wrapped up the on-ice portion of its selection camp on Tuesday night with a scrimmage against a group of university players. Canada won 7-4 and now head coach Don Hay and his staff must decide, which 13 players must be released in order to trim the roster to 22. Here is what Hay had to say during his scrum with reporters following Tuesdays game in Calgary. Q: Are things more clear or more cloudy? Hay: Well, theres lots of discussion to take place tonight. I think that guys played hard. You wish it would have been a little better competition, but I thought our guys did some good things out there. Q: What did you think of goalie Scott Wedgewoods performance?Hay: I thought he looked very calm and confident in net and I thought he really did a good job. Q: What did you think of Philip Danaults performance?Hay: He played well. He got those two quick goals there and that was a key part of the second period. I thought he played well last night also. Q: Who else stood out? Hay: I thought Boone Jenner played a good game and I thought a couple other guys really stepped up and played well. Q: Brett Connolly continued to play a physical style of game. Were you happy with how he looked? Hay: I was happy with that line. I thought that line played very well so, you know, [Brett] Bulmer played well, [Michael] Bournival played well, Connolly played well so they did some real good forechecking and gave us a lot of energy. Q: Happy that youre team was able to battle back after getting down early? Hay: We didnt get pushed that hard really. I would have liked to have seen us get pushed a little bit harder. Youd like to see a little bit more adversity during the game, but I thought we got down early and pushed back and get the lead and play with that lead. Q: Long night ahead for you? Hay: Yeah, there will be some interesting discussions going on. Team Canada Lines vs. CIS All-Stars Forwards Phil Di Giuseppe - Ryan Strome - Christian ThomasTanner Pearson - Boone Jenner - Tyler Toffoli Brad Ross - Philip Danault - Ty Rattie Brett Bulmer - Michael Bournival - Brett Connolly Defence Nathan Beaulieu - Cody Ceci Joe Morrow - Ryan MurphyJamie Oleksiak - Alex PetrovicScott Harrington - Mark Pysyk Goalies Tyler Bunz and Mark Visentin played for Team Canada while Scott Wedgewood and Louis Domingue played for the university team. The following players were healthy scratches, which means they have almost certainly made the team: Brandon Gormley, Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Murray, Brendan Gallagher, Freddie Hamilton, Mark Scheifele, Devante Smith-Pelly and Mark Stone. Jonathan Huberdeau (foot) and Quinton Howden (concussion-like symptoms) did not play. NO OFFENCE? NO PROBLEM Team Canada head coach Don Hay is not worried about the lack of scoring at the national junior teams selection camp. Only six pucks have gotten by the goalies during the two intra-squad games. "Offence comes from teamwork," said Hay, who tried out different line combinations in the games. "Theyre not a team yet. There is individual skills out there, but you really create offence by playing together and working together and having combinations. Also, the goalies have been the best players on the ice in the games. "I think the offence will come as we move ahead." One player who has been strangely silent is centre Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs. The fifth overall pick in last years NHL draft was considered a shoo-in to make the team when the camp opened, but now TSN analyst Bob McKenzie says Strome must play well Tuesday night to assure himself a spot on the final roster. VIDEO: McKenzie talks about Stromes struggles http://bit.ly/rBHAX0 BEST OFFENCE IS A GOOD DEFENCE Ryan Murphy has not registered a point in the two games, but that is not what worries the Kitchener Rangers defenceman, who scored 26 goals and racked up 79 points in 63 OHL games last season. "I want to take as much risk out of my game as I can," Murphy said. "I know the coaches know what I can do offensively, its my defensive part of my game that still has the question mark beside it so Im just trying to play a strong defensive game. "Its a 200-foot game and thats something the coaches have tried to get across to everyone at camp and we understand that and we have to be responsible at both ends of the ice to play in a tournament like this." While defencemen Dougie Hamilton, Brandon Gormley and Ryan Murray appear to have spots locked up, Murphy knows he still needs to perform well in Tuesday nights final scrimmage to ensure himself a place on the squad. "It is the last chance and I do want to be an impact player out there, but once again I do want to be as solid as I can be defensively." DUMBAS DISCONTENT Head coach Don Hay was asked about why he let defenceman Mathew Dumba go as part of his seven cuts Tuesday morning. The 17-year-old did not look out of place during the camp despite being the youngest player on the ice. "I thought Matt did very well," said Hay. "Theyre all good players. Matt Dumbas an elite player. He was captain of the under-18 team and we knew he would do well, but is he ready for this tournament at this time? We dont think so." Forward Jaden Schwartz, one of four returning players at the camp, was Dumbas roommate and tried to console the Red Deer Rebel after he got the news. "The phone rang and they asked for Matt and I just tried to wish him the best and hes a young kid and I thought he played really well. I thought he played a very good camp. I remember talking last night and he said that was one of the best hockey games hes ever played," Schwartz said. NO SILVER LINING The fact Mathew Dumba still has another chance to make Canadas world junior hockey team did not make getting cut any easier. "I really wanted to make this team and it was hard for me to wake up this morning and pack my stuff up. Its emotional, but Im going to get through and just the experience was great," said Dumba, a defenceman with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League, his voice cracking. "I felt I was ready. I felt I was ready to maybe play as that seventh defenceman and kind of be a guy, a spark or something like that. I felt I played really well at camp." Head coach Don Hay and his staff released seven players Tuesday morning. The other cuts were: Rimouski blueliner Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, defenceman Brenden Kichton of the Spokane Chiefs, forward Mark McNeill of the Prince Albert Raiders, Brandon forward Michael Ferland, Saint John Sea Dogs forward Zack Phillips and Kootenay forward Max Reinhart. GOOD ADVICE Each player received an early wake-up call letting them know the bad news before meeting briefly with reporters and exiting through a side door of the team hotel and jumping into a waiting car. "I had trouble sleeping for sure," said the 17-year-old Dumba, who was the youngest player at the selection camp. "I was up every hour and it was just one of those things where its on your mind constantly and its tough to go through." An emotional Dumba was calmed down by his roommate Jaden Schwartz moments after receiving the call. Schwartz, who was on the Canadian team last year and is considered a safe bet to once again make the squad this year, pointed out that both Tyler Seguin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were also cut by the junior team. "Schwartzy this morning, he woke up and I was really upset and he was pretty upset too and he said to me, They cut Seguin one year and they cut Nuge the other and [they became the] first and second overall [draft picks]. He said, Use that as motivation, and its certainly uphill from here." And after leaving the hotel Dumba was actually able to make a small joke about his release, posting the following message on his Twitter account: "You can find me somewhere in a ditch between Calgary and Red Deer... Suiy watch #imnotactuallyseriousrelax" Kichton, a New York Islanders prospect, responded via his account: "Ill be right there with you bud..... #atleastyouhavenextyear" Dumba was one of five draft-eligible players at the camp. The other four – Everett defenceman Ryan Murray, University of Michigan forward Phil Di Giuseppe, Ottawa defenceman Cody Ceci and Barrie forward Tanner Pearson – all survived the cuts. NO REGRETS Not everybody was as emotional as Dumba. "A little disappointed," said Reinhart, "but its not the end of the world. Its a tough team to make and I wasnt the player they were looking for. "I think I played pretty well. I dont think theres much I couldve done differently." McNeill, who like Dumba will get another chance next year, echoed that sentiment. "I got the call about 10 minutes ago, obviously disappointing, but at the same time I left it all out there on the line so theres no regrets," McNeill said. Meanwhile, Ferland was lamenting a poor performance in Mondays intra-squad game, which may have led to his release. "I felt I had a good game the first game," said Ferland. "I dont think I had that good of game last night, but its a short camp and you got to be ready to go from the start." WHATS NEXT There are 35 players left (four goalies, 11 defencemen and 20 forwards) at the selection camp. The final 22-man roster will be announced Wednesday morning. Canada plays a group of Canadian Interuniversity Sport all-stars Tuesday at 7 pm MT. That will represent the last chance for players to make their case to the coaches. Walter Payton Official Jersey. which means he would be on pace to get back to full

FLORHAM PARK, N. Devin Hester Jersey.J. -- Darrelle Revis will be a shutdown cornerback again. Hes certain of it. The New York Jets star cornerback was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday to repair a torn knee ligament suffered three weeks ago in a win at Miami. While he knows the road to recovery will be arduous, Revis expects to be playing at an elite level next season. "Once I get back to 100 per cent," Revis said Monday, "to me, theres no question I (will) be back to where I was." And thats being a player widely recognized as perhaps the best defensive player in the NFL, a cornerback who routinely shuts down others teams best wide receivers and takes away entire sections of the field with his air-tight coverage. It was the first time Revis addressed the media since he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Sept. 23. His business manager has posted pictures of his pre-surgery rehabilitation on Twitter, and Revis is also having a film crew follow him through the rehabilitation process. The cornerback is eager to return "as soon as possible," but understands he needs to be patient while the Jets continue without him. "I never had an injury like this, so this is all new for me as well," Revis said. "But, yeah, Im a hard worker. I know Im going to work my butt off and get back to where I need to be." Dr. Russell Warren, who is the New York Giants team doctor, will perform the surgery in Manhattan to repair his ACL, a procedure that will include taking a graft from his patellar tendon. Revis thinks he should be jogging in 12 to 16 weeks. Normal recovery time from an ACL injury is usually six to nine months, which means he would be on pace to get back to full football activities by around the start of training camp. "I just want to get back as fast as possible where I feel comfortable, Im out there and play like I usually do," Revis said. "I think thats the biggest goal. ... As soon as I feel 100 per cent, Ill be ready to go, whether thats January, February, March -- it doesnt matter." Revis knew something was wrong as soon as the injury occurred because it felt unlike anything hed ever experienced. He was running to defend a screen pass when he clutched his left knee. "It felt like somebody had a knife and cut through my knee," he said. "Thats the feeling I got from trying to make the cut. Its crazy because Ive made that cut a thousand million times. ... I guess it was meant to happen at the time." Revis has consulted various athletes who have come back from similar injuries, including teammates Antonio Cromartie and Sione Pouha, as well as Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson and former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb. He watched the Jets 35-9 rout of Indianapolis from a suite at MetLife Stadium on Sunday -- something that hasnt necessarily been easy for one of the teams leaders. He has been around the Jets training facility constantly, but has chosen not to participate in team meetings so he wouldnt be a "distraction." "Its been hard," he said, "because now youre looking outside in instead of inside out." Cromartie has stepped in as the No. 1 cornerback in Revis absence, with excellent performances against Indianapolis Reggie Wayne and Houstons Andre Johnson the past two games. "Antonio Cromartie is doing a great impersonation of Darrelle Revis," said NFL Networks Deion Sanders, a former All-Pro cornerback. Revis contract issue is also a major issue in his comeback. The 27-year-old cornerback is signed through the 2013 season, and had hoped to restructure his deal before this season. When that didnt happen, Revis chose to report on time anyway to training camp -- and had a lost season, first because of a concussion that sidelined him for a game and then the knee injury. Still, Rex Ryan and the Jets held out hope that Revis could return for a possible Super Bowl run, so they put off placing him on season-ending injured reserve until last Friday -- when they were in desperate need of filling his roster spot because of injuries to other players. Now, Revis will head into another off-season knowing hell have to prove to the Jets that hes healthy before he gets a contract extension or new deal. "Im sure it might raise peoples eyebrows with how Im going to look when I come back," he said. "Im OK with that. I wouldnt expect anything less. TAMPA, Fla. -- The New York Islanders turned a strong performance into an impressive road win. Evgeni Nabokov made 18 saves for second shutout this season and 54th overall in the NHL, John Tavares scored his 17th goal, and the Islanders beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 on Thursday night. "I think we played a good simple road game," New York defenceman Andrew MacDonald said. "Our special teams are good. Guys are getting in lanes to block shots, and it certainly made the difference." Nabokov made an in-close save on Victor Hedman in the second period, and Tavares had a power-play goal midway through the frame to help the Islanders improve to 4-1-2 over their last seven games. "Theyre going to get chances, but the key is always what kind of chances theyre going to get, and where are they going to get them, and how much time are they going to get," Nabokov said. "I thought we did a very good job on the big guys. This was a team effort in the zone." Brad Boyes added an empty-net goal in the final minute of play. Anders Lindback stopped 27 shots for Tampa Bay, which has lost eight of 10. "Its just a weird thing," Lightning coach Guy Boucher said. "Were scoring tons of goals and were not defending well. All of a sudden now were defending well and were not scoring goals. Its flip-flop, flip-flop. Its hard to take. The story of our year, we cant get everything together on the same day." Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier didnt play and is out indefinitely because of an undisclosed lower body injury. Matt Moulson set up the goal with a backhanded pass from the low slot to Tavares, who was positioned near the post. "He had his back to me and made a great pass and drew a couple of guys," Tavares said. "He probably could have put it in himself, but really made it easy. I just had a tap in." New York, which entered with the NHLs best road power play, had just the one advantage in the game. Tampa Bay failed to convert on its two chances. "Especially this time of the year, the special teams are going to play a big part," Lightning left wing Ryan Malone said. "Their team got the goal and our team didnt." Toronto Blue Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava wont be heading to Baltimore after all. Stan Mikita Jersey. According to the Baltimore Sun, the 50-year-old turned down the Orioles offer to become the clubs general manager on Tuesday. LaCava said that his decision stemmed from the fact that he wanted to remain with the Blue Jays. "This was about the Toronto Blue Jays more than it is anything about the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles were classy in everything they did, and I think they are going to go down the right path," LaCava told The Baltimore Sun. "For me, it was how much I love the Toronto Blue Jays and I really, really treasure my relationship with my general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, and I really want to see this through with him. He created a great atmosphere to work up there, along with president Paul Beeston, and it is very hard to leave them." With the free agent period starting in one day, the Orioles are the only team in baseball that does not have a top baseball executive in place, after Andy MacPhail stepped down in October after over four years as president of baseball operations. LaCava, who was a finalist in the past for GM jobs in Seattle and Pittsburgh, seems to be content where he is at this point in his career. "I am working in a great place, a job that I love," LaCava said. "Its just as simple as that." Keith Magnuson Jersey. Fans were upset after the captain of the American League squad said he would choose a hometown player for his four-man team, but instead bypassed Royals star Billy Butler and went with Prince Fielder of the Tigers, Mark Trumbo of the Angels and Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays. Fielder won the competition, and the AL routed the National League. Cano wound up going 0 for 10, though, and each failure was met by cheers. Cano brushed off the cold reception, but others werent so kind to Kansas City. Several national TV broadcasters, radio hosts and columnists called the fans everything from "jerks" to "classless." "Robinson Cano certainly picked people he thought should be on there," Commissioner Bud Selig told the Baseball Writers Association of America on Tuesday. "While I understand Kansas City and I understand the whole Billy Butler thing, I really felt very badly last night." Union head Michael Weiner thought the level of jeering was not justified. "It struck me that it moved a little bit past traditional, good-natured booing, particularly for an event like that, and got into another area," Weiner said. "But Robinson Cano grew up in the Dominican Republic, plays in the Bronx, plays for the Yankees. Hes going to be fine." Cano said that he was prepared for a frigid reception, even though it appeared to rattle him every time his father, Jose, delivered a pitch that he popped up, fouled off or grounded out. Yankees teammates Curtis Granderson and CC Sabathia even interrupted the proceedings to give father and son and a pep talk, but it didnt do a whole lot of good. "It was interesting," Granderson said. "It was one of those things where once it started, everyone else caught on, and the performance that Robbie was able to do just added to it. But its like Robinson said, were the Yaankees, we get booed all the time. Corey Crawford Jersey" Yankees star Alex Robinson sent Cano a text message of encouragement -- "He said, you know, hes a guy thats looking out for me," Cano said -- while several others came to his defence. "Im sure it happens in every ballpark, where theres the hometown guy didnt make it, and in Robbies defence, its hard to pick three guys," White Sox slugger Adam Dunn said. "It would be hard, man, and its kind of a tough spot to be put in." Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun questioned the practice of having players pick the teams. "I understand why they have a captain, but I also feel like it puts guys in uncomfortable positions," he said, adding that hes certain David Wright of the Mets will be chosen next year, when the All-Star game is played at Citi Field in New York. "You dont want to deal with what Robinson dealt with," Braun said. The passionate reaction by Royals fans created plenty of drama, though, particularly in an event that often becomes stale by the time the first round grinds to a conclusion. Viewership for ESPN was up 3 per cent over last year, and in New York, there was a 10 per cent increase as hometown fans tuned in to see Cano flame out. There were more than 800,000 Twitter and Facebook comments throughout the night, twice the volume of last year, and Twitters top 10 trends worldwide were related to the derby when the final round began. "Kansas City fans are better than that, but I dont get on them," said Chris Berman, who called the derby for ESPN. "I get it, but the three guys he picked were the three top guys." Butler, who made his first All-Star team this season, did his best to deflect questions about the relentless booing. He said that he appreciated Kansas City fans for their support, and that he spoke to Cano after the derby to make sure everything was fine. "There are no hard feelings. There never was," Butler said. "Me and Robbie are great friends, were great competitors, and love playing each other." ' ' '

LOS ANGELES -- There was only one thing Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy could do when he realized the umpires would not change their minds. Vonta Leach Jersey. He went Hollywood. Tracy put on a show after he was ejected for disputing a reversed call in the seventh inning of the Rockies 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. The Dodgers had a runner at second with two outs when Shane Victorino hit a sinking liner and Dexter Fowler attempted a sliding catch. First base umpire Mike Estabrook Called Victorino out. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly came out to question the initial ruling. The umpires huddled and they overturned the call. TV replays showed Fowler trapped the ball. "I caught it one hundred per cent. No doubt," Fowler said. "Shane was still running, and I was like, Arent there three outs? I told the first base umpire he made the right call. I walked into the dugout and skip asked me: Hey, did you catch it? And I told him: Yeah, I caught it. Id never seen that before -- we go in the dugout and then have to go back out." Tracy was ejected by third base umpire and crew chief Mike Everitt when he slammed his cap to the ground. Tracy remained on the field for several minutes having an animated discussion with Everitt. "I think Im a pretty tolerant guy, but theres a limit to everything," Tracy said. "Quite frankly, I think he caught the ball and theres no question about that. Ive seen the replay a few times, and even if he trapped it, I understand and appreciate the fact that the umpires are doing the very best they can to get the calls right. And yet, on that particular play, I find it hard to believe how three other guys can weigh in being as far away from that as they were." The Dodgers failed to capitalize after play resumed because Adam Ottavino retired Mark Ellis on a flyball to left with runners at the corners. Ottavino (3-1) took over in the fifth inning for a tiring Drew Pomeranz and gave up one hit in three innings of relief -- the disputed single by Victorino. Carlos Gonzalez had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and rookie Jordan Pacheco added an RBI single in the third for the Rockies, who prevented the Dodgers from overtaking NL West-leading San Francisco following the Giants loss at St. Louis. Ottavino also got his first big league win at the Dodgers expense in a relief outing on June 1 at Coors Field. Matt Belisle, who came in having allowed 18 earned runs over 19 2-3 innings in his 17 previous appearances at Dodger Stadium, escaped his own jam in the eighth by striking out Luis Cruz with two men on. Rafael Betancourt pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 22 chances. Dodgers lefty Chris Capuano (10-8) allowed two runs and nine hits in seven innings and struck out seven. Pomeranz threw 84 pitches over four innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven. In his previous four starts, he was 0-3 with a 9.35 ERA after pitching 6 1-3 innings of one-hit ball in a 5-1 victory at Washington on July 6 "I wish Id thrown a few less pitches, but sometimes that happens," Pomeranz said. "My mechanics really werent the greatest today and I struggled with command, but when you make key pitches, you can make all of that kind of go away. I was just missing up with my fastball, but I made it work out there with what I had and my stuff was good when I threw strikes." Pomeranz gave up singles to his first two batters, but escaped his jam by striking out Juan Rivera with two men in scoring position. Two innings later, he walked his first two batters before retiring Matt Kemp on a double-play grounder and striking out Hanley Ramirez with Victorino at third base. "I didnt do my job today," Kemp said. "Victorino gets on and then and Mark gets on base, which is what theyre supposed to do. That happened two innings in a row, where the first two batters get on and I dont drive in any runs or even move them over. We just didnt get any bid hits tonight. Their job is to get us out, and thats what they did." The Rockies, who have played without shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for the last 58 games because of a groin strain, announced Monday that the other remaining star of their 2007 pennant-winning infield -- first baseman Todd Helton -- will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. Helton, a five-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner who is the franchise leader in almost every major offensive category, turns 39 on Aug. 20 and is determined to return for the final season of the two-year, $9.9 million contract extension he signed in March 2010. Capuano gave up singles to two of his first three batters before Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly for his team-high 74th RBI. In the third, Capuano gave up three straight one-out singles -- including a run-scoring hit by Pacheco -- but minimized the damage by retiring Ramon Hernandez on a double-play grounder after an intentional walk to Gonzalez. NOTES: Rockies 2B Chris Nelson, who missed 17 games because of an irregular heartbeat, was reinstated from the disabled list to replace Helton on the active roster. ... The Dodgers designated OF Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment and recalled OF Jerry Sands from Triple-A Albuquerque. ... SOCHI, Russia -- Mikael Kingsbury punched his ticket to Sochi in Sochi. The 20-year-old freestyle skier from Deux-Montagnes, Que., won World Cup gold in moguls Friday at the 2014 Olympic Games venue in Sochi, Russia. With his fifth gold in seven events this season, Kingsbury also met the criteria for early nomination to the Canadas Olympic team. "Theres some pressure off my shoulders now," Kingsbury said during a conference call. "It was important for me to perform here and to make sure when I come back for the Olympics I know a lot about the course." Kingsburys teammate Phil Marquis of Quebec City took bronze. Defending Olympic champion Alex Bilodeau of Rosemere, Que., was 14th. Bilodeau said on Twitter his skis slid into slush after his second jump. Fridays moguls at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park went ahead even though snowboard parallel slalom races there were cancelled because of warm weather. The moguls skiers competed in soft and slushy snow in qualifying and then the temperature dropped, causing the course to harden for the next round, Kingsbury said. Rain fell during the evenings super final of six competitors. "Well be ready for anything next year," Kingsbury said. "Hopefully if the weather is like that next season, Ill be ready. Baltimore Ravens Jerseys" Kingsbury leads the overall standings with 605 points ahead of Bilodeau with 453. The Canadian women were held off the podium in Sochi. Audrey Robichaud of Quebec City was fifth behind victor Hannah Kearney of the U.S. Montreals Justine Dufour-Lapointe was seventh, but remains second in the standings behind Kearney. Competition for spots on Canadas Olympic mens moguls team will be fierce because of international quotas. Canada can take only four men to compete in Sochi next year. Two podiums plus a top-16 finish, with one of those results either from Sochi or the world championship in March, is enough for the skiers to know before the summer that theyll be a 2014 Olympian. "They want to have that result already in the bank so they can put that behind them and focus on either preparing for the Olympic Games or just performing at the world championships," said Peter Judge, chief executive officer of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association. "Being able to tick off that box and have a good experience here is critical. Certainly Phil on the podium and having two podiums is a big plus for the team." Freestyle halfpipe events are scheduled for Saturday, followed by aerials Sunday. ' ' '

2012 season that saw him throw for more

The Rouge takes a look at each team and poses their biggest question heading into the off-season. Personalized Steelers Jersey. Today, the Montreal Alouettes. It may not look it at first glance, but the Montreal Alouettes have a bit of a tricky situation at the QB position to figure out this off-season. Anthony Calvillo hasnt yet decided whether hell return for 2013, but the hope is he saddles up for at least one more season. Thats the good news. The tricky part concerns their long-term future. Adrian McPherson has long now been considered the heir apparent to Calvillo, but he can become a free agent this winter and may jump at the chance to be a starting QB sooner (with another team) than later (with the Als, after Calvillo retires.) GM Jim Popps hands may be tied. Montreal cant, and surely doesnt want to move on from Calvillo before hes ready to call it quits. At 40-years-old, Calvillo proved hes still got it with a 2012 season that saw him throw for more than 5,000 yards and 31 touchdowns. The Als have to know that Calvillos career is nearing the finish line however, and after developing McPherson the first five years of his CFL career, it would have to hurt seeing him succeed as a starter somewhere else. Montreal hasnt had to worry about their starting QB for a very long time – longer than any other team in the league. Will they find a way to continue that streak this off-season, or could it ultimately now be out of their hands? The Rouge asks: How should the Alouettes handle McPherson this off-season? As always, its Your! Call. Personalized Patriots Jersey. LOUIS -- St.It doesnt get much bigger than this week for Ryder Hesjedal. Standing second overall in the Giro dItalia, the 31-year-old from Victoria has five stages and 925 kilometres to go before the storied race finishes Sunday in Milan with a 30-kilometre time trial. Hesjedal, the designated leader of the Garmin-Barracuda team, enjoyed a rest day Monday before climbing back on his bike. "Its been tough every day," he said of the two-week trek to date. "This race always has something there to keep the stress high and the pain going." Hesjedal has been up to the challenge, however. The lanky veteran has had two stints in the leaders pink jersey -- making Canadian cycling history in the process. He has powered his way up mountains, endured cold and rain, ridden through the clouds and pushed his body to the limit. So is he enjoying the ride? "Hard to believe but yeah," he told The Canadian Press on Monday. "I mean theres no way you can do it if you didnt. Its too hard, its too long, its too demanding. If you were hating it every moment, you wouldnt be here. "Sure theres hard moments and youre suffering and youd rather be other places, but the rewards you get back from persevering, thats what keeps you here and I wouldnt trade anything for it." Hesjedal is 30 seconds back of Spains Joaquin Rodriguez. Two-time winner Ivan Basso is third, 1:22 behind Rodriguez, followed by Italian Paolo Tiralongo (1:26) and Roman Kreuziger of the Czech Republic (1:27). Defending champion Michele Scarponi of Italy is sixth (1:36). "(Domenico) Pozzovivo is also a gifted climber and thats whats coming up," Hesjedal said of the 13th-placed Italian (3:17). "The differences can be a lot bigger now once you hit these high mountains." Whatever happens, Hesjedal has no regrets. "Im completely satisfied with this race to date," said the Canadian. "Ill just take every day as a bonus and see how far I can take it to Milan. Definitely a race I wont forget. Its just been great. "I based a lot of my season around this race at the start of the year. Kind of sitting back and not pushing at a few races that I like to (push) and really having to hold back. Its worked out well." Hesjedal had identified the races final week as one in which he could profit. He has good endurance, climbs well and is also good in time trials. He has also finished strongly in his last two Tour De France rides The stages of the final week are classified as one flat, one medium mountain and three high mountains before the deciding time trial. "Its more of the first two weeks. I mean every days hard," said Hesjedal. "Theres always something, theree are always critical parts of each stage. Customized Lions Jersey Ive had to race the first two weeks at a very high level being near the front, chasing the (pink) jersey and defending the jersey, being in the jersey. "So every days been hard and important. And this last week, its the same. Even the medium mountain days, (as) they call them, in the first two weeks were brutal. Its been that way the whole race ... Im just going to keep doing what Ive been doing, thats all there is to it. "Were in the groove now, and we just keep pushing through and it will be over before we know it." Hesjedal has already shown in the Tour de France that he is a force to be reckoned with. In 2010, after teammate Christian Vande Velde crashed, Hesjedal took over the Garmin leaders mantle and finished seventh overall But his third Giro campaign has shown more evidence of his mettle. He won the pink jersey back Saturday with a lung-busting break near the end of a summit that earned him some precious distance from his fellow general classification rivals. Hesjedal said there was no pre-planning. He just felt good and saw an opportunity to gain an advantage when some of his rivals found themselves without support. "I figured Id see how my legs would respond and get the ball rolling. I was able to just stick to it and benefit." Rodriguez repaid the favour Sunday, winning it back with a sortie of his own in a stage that went to lone wolf rider Matteo Rabottini. The Italian rose much of the mountainous stage by himself, fighting off the challenge of Rodriguez in the final metres. "I think thats the beauty of the sport. He was able to probably do more than he thought he was capable of," Hesjedal said of Rabottinis defiant finish. Hesjedal and his teammates rode stationary bikes Monday, just to keep the legs loose. The rest of the day was "mostly just sleeping in, having a good lunch and not having the stress of the racing." Tuesdays 16th stage is a mainly uphill 173-kilometre ride from Limone sul Garda to Falzes/Pfalzen. Hesjedal will be back on his primary race bike after being forced to use his spare bike Sunday because of a drive train issue. "Theyre as close as can be to being the same but its just never the same once youve been riding a bike for a couple of months -- the way the seats broken in and those sorts of things. Its not the same but sometimes you have to deal with it." In other Canadian news, Dominique Rollin of Boucherville, Que., stands 126th, ahead of Christian Meier of Sussex, N.B., in 137th and Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., in 162nd. Rollin is riding for the French FDJ team while Meier are Tuft are with Australias GreenEdge. ' ' '
