We can feel good about the third period but we need to start putting some wins up

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Gilbert Brule scored the overtime winner to lead the Oklahoma Barons to a 4-3 win over the Abbotsford Heat in American Hockey League action Saturday night. Josh Green, with two goals, and Philippe Cornet scored for Oklahoma City (8-2-1), which has won four straight, including back-to-back wins over the Heat. Linus Omark had three assists for the Barons. Greg Nemisz scored twice for Abbotsford (7-4-1), while Ben Walter added a single. "We definitely didnt finish the way we wanted to," said Nemisz. "We can feel good about the third period but we need to start putting some wins up." Oklahoma Citys David LeNeveu won the battle of the backup goalies, making 19 saves, while at the other end Joni Ortio stopped 21 shots in the loss. The penalty kill was the strength of the Heat this year — they were first in the league entering their homestand — but allowed three goals, including two on five chances, Saturday. "Youre really good for a while and you ride that wave but after a while the hockey gods just put pucks in the cage," said Heat head coach Troy Ward. "Obviously with the four talented guys that theyre going to put on the ice (that will also make a difference.) I felt bad for penalty killers." Also, using Ortio instead of Leland Irving, the leagues leader in minutes played, accounted for part of that. "Our goaltender change played a big part (as well.) Nothing against Ortio though, since it was his first start of the year," said Ward The Heat opened the scoring just 76 seconds into the game when Krys Kolanos bounced the puck off the side of the net right to Walter in front and he beat LeNeveau along the ice. During a Heat penalty kill, LeNeveau mishandled a clearing attempt and gave it right to Nemisz who made no mistake for his fourth on the year. Oklahoma City got it back on the same power play as Cornet and Brule worked a give-and-go, finishing with Cornet burying the puck through Irvings legs at 5:01 of the first. The Barons tied the game at 11:18 when Omark slid a perfect pass over to Ryan Keller who dished to Green and he put the puck around the goalie. The Barons took their first lead midway through the game. Omarks pass, as he was falling to the ice, deflected off a skate right to Green who dangled to his backhand and lifted it over Ortio at 9:41. Abbotsford tied the game at the end of a Oklahoma City too-many-men penalty at 12:56. Mikkelson sent the puck to the front of the net and Nemisz slid it under LeNeveau. "It was two pretty fortunate bounces tonight," said Nemisz of his two goals. "Its about being in the right spot." The overtime winner came when Omark drew a holding penalty on Abbotsfords Chris Breen. On that power play Brule took a pass from Keller and one-timed for his fourth goal of the year. OAKLAND, Calif. Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping . -- Doug Martin never had a homecoming like this during his stellar college career at Boise State. Martin rushed for a franchise-record 251 yards and four touchdowns and Ahmad Black intercepted a Carson Palmer pass after Oakland had cut an 18-point deficit to three late in the fourth quarter as the Bucs beat the Raiders 42-32 on Sunday. Martin, who was born in Oakland and went to high school in nearby Stockton, had a memorable return home for the Bucs (4-4) by scoring on runs of 1, 45, 67 and 70 yards in front of more than 60 friends and family members. "Everybody was there. It was awesome," he said. "Its surreal right now. Im just doing my job out there. Im honoured." Martin, the 31st pick in April out of Boise State, became the first back since at least 1940 to score on three TD runs of at least 45 yards in one game, according to STATS LLC. He finished 45 yards shy of tying Adrian Petersons single game record of 296 set in his rookie season in 2007 and joined Denvers Mike Anderson as the only backs with at least 250 yards rushing and four TDs in a single game. Martin had 214 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns last week in Minnesota to cap a month in which he was the NFLs top offensive rookie. He was even better against the Raiders. "That was a great, great performance," coach Greg Schiano said. "After having a big outing in Minnesota on national TV and winning some awards you wonder how the young guys is going to handle the success. This test he stepped up and met the challenge for sure." But Tampa Bay still struggled to hold onto an 18-point, fourth-quarter lead against an Oakland team that lost star running back Darren McFadden to an ankle injury late in the first half. Palmer threw for 414 yards and had three of his four touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Oakland cut the Bucs lead to 35-32 with 3:51 to go. The Raiders then got a defensive stop and took over at their 38 with 2:42 to play. But on second down, Palmer threw off-target looking for Rod Streater down the left sideline and Black came up with the second of Palmers three interceptions. "Mistakes like that you cant overcome and you cant make and me being the quarterback you cant do that," Palmer said. "I cant throw that ball. You just need to take a sack sometimes if things are off of the same page and come back the next play." Martin then ran three straight times to score his fourth touchdown and put the game away. Josh Freeman threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns as Tampa Bay scored at least 28 points for a franchise-record fourth straight game and reached .500 at the midpoint of Schianos first season to match last seasons win total. "Its fun, man," said receiver Vincent Jackson, who scored Tampas first touchdown. "We have a lot of different weapons. The coaches do a great job of just giving teams different looks, spreading the ball around. ... Its fun to play in an offence like this that can be very explosive. The Raiders, coming off two straight victories against one-win Jacksonville and Kansas City, had no answers for Martin and the Bucs, allowing the three long runs in the second half when Martin gained 220 of his yards. "They were kind of backbreaking scores there late, long runs after long runs," defensive end Dave Tollefson said. "We just have to get some stuff cleaned up. I dont think theyve burnt down the facility in Alameda yet. Im not trying to make light of it. Weve got another week, and the crazy thing is were still in this thing, in the division." Along with the loss, the Raiders had to deal with another injury to McFadden, who left in the second quarter because of his ankle. X-rays were negative but McFadden did not return and his status was unknown. He missed 19 games in his first four seasons with foot, toe, shoulder, knee and hamstring injuries. But McFadden would have been no help trying to stop Martin, who broke James Wilders franchise record of 219 yards in 1983 despite the absence of All Pro guard Carl Nicks, who was placed on injured reserve last week with a left toe injury. Martin helped break open what had been a close game with his huge second half. He gave Tampa Bay the lead for good with a 45-yard TD run on the first possession of the second quarter and then added the two other long runs as he continually faked out the Raiders front seven and outran their usually speedy secondary. "Hes turned into a heck of a player here these last two weeks," Bucs safety Ronde Barber said. "Hes really jumped onto the scene, just the way hes handled the pressure that hes had to be the main guy here in our offence these past couple of weeks. Its impressive, man." The Raiders scored in the final two minutes of the first half for the eighth straight game this season to take a 10-7 lead at the break on a 25-yard TD pass from Palmer to rookie Rod Streater. WINNIPEG -- Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was happy to share the credit for his third shutout of the season. Holtby stopped 35 shots and Mike Ribeiro had a goal and an assist as the Capitals blanked the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 Saturday. "Goalies usually get too much credit for the good and too much blame for the bad, thats how it goes," Holtby said. "You could see in a game like this, its not a shutout for myself, thats a shutout for the team." Matt Hendricks and Todd Brouwer, with his team-leading ninth goal of the season, also scored as the Capitals inched their record up to 8-11-1. Winnipeg goalie Ondrej Pavelec made 18 saves for the Jets, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. The last time the Jets went scoreless at home was Jan. 12, 2012 in a 2-0 loss to San Jose. The last time they were shut out was in a 3-0 loss in Montreal on Feb. 5, 2012. Evander Kane says the Jets will ease the sting of the loss once they get out of town. "Were going to have to put this one behind us," Kane said. "Weve got (four) on the road here so weve got to be ready to go and be the road warriors again like we were last time." The Jets (10-10-1) won four of five road games before coming home to beat New Jersey 3-1 on Thursday before being shut out for the first time this season by the Capitals. Just 41 seconds into the game, the Jets had to kill a penalty when forward Bryan Little was called for holding. The Capitals only got one shot on net with the man advantage, and it was their only shot during the first 10 minutes of the period. Winnipeg ended up outshooting Washington 15-5 in the scoreless first. Ribeiro said those statistics are deceiving because about seven or eight of them werent quality chances. "I could have probably stopped those ones from the side," Ribeiro said. "(They) werent dangerous shots like they had at the start and we knew that. "We just played simple. Our (defencemen) chipped the puck out most of the time and let the forwards race for it a lot of times. Thats what we need on the road, just a simple game." Washington scored first during a possessionn that looked like it was going to cost Winnipeg more than a goal.dddddddddddd Winnipegs first-line right-winger Blake Wheeler slid to block a point shot by Capitals defenceman John Erskine and then buckled to the ice in pain. The play continued and Hendricks redirected a shot by Ribeiro that went over Pavelecs shoulder and into the net at 10:56 for Hendricks fourth goal of the season. Wheeler was still lying on the ice during the goal. He was helped off by teammates as he kept his weight off his right foot. Despite looking like a bad injury, Wheeler was back on the ice a few shifts later and finished the game. Head coach Claude Noel said Wheeler "has probably a heavy-duty bone contusion" on the side of his leg and would be assessed. Jets right-winger Anthony Peluso left the game in the first period after getting into a fight with Capitals left-winger Aaron Volpatti, who was playing his first game after being picked up on waivers. Peluso, who got in the most punches on the helmetless Volpatti, is "week-to-week" with a hand injury, Noel said. The Capitals turned the tables in shots on goal in the second period, outshooting Winnipeg 13-4. They kept the pressure going in the third and it paid off with goals 52 seconds apart. Brouwer scored when his wrist shot went over Pavelecs glove at 3:24. Ribeiro then flipped the rebound of an Alex Ovechkin shot over Pavelecs stick at 4:16 for the 3-0 lead. Noel said he thought his team played hard and with some heart and it would have helped if theyd scored on the power play. Both teams went 0-for-3 and Winnipeg is now 1-for-32 on the power play in their last 12 games and 10-for-70 (14.3 per cent) on the season. "The numbers arent great and they havent been great," Noel said. "Weve been winning in spite of it, and we knew that this could happen so we just know that its got to come around." Notes - Winnipegs streak of scoring first in seven straight games (5-2 during that streak) was snapped ... The Jets head out for a four-game road trip next week, with a pair against Florida, one versus Tampa and the last against New Jersey on their way home. ' ' '

MANILA, Philippines -- David Beckham said he has a "big decision to make" after his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expires and reiterated his desire to play for for the British team in the London Olympics next year. The former England captain arrived in Manila on Thursday with his Galaxy teammates for the second leg of a series of friendlies. "Im very proud of the time that Ive spent with the Galaxy and it might continue," said Beckham, whose contract expires at the end of the tour. "I think at the end of the day I have a big decision to make but I obviously havent made one yet." Beckham said he "would love to be part of the GB team" in the Olympics next year, especially since the games will be played in a part of London where he grew up. "Hopefully Ill be going back to London next summer," he said. The Galaxy won 1-0 against Indonesia on Wednesday and head to Australia after the game with the Philippine national team on Saturday. Saturdays friendly in Manila is expected to give a boost to football in a country where the national team is lowly ranked and basketball and boxing are the most popular sports in town. Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena encouraged Filipino football players to "work hard" and "chase the dream" of competing internationally. The Philippine team is improving, reaching the semifinals this year at the Asean Football Federation Cup. Most of the players are half-Filipinos from European leagues who want to play for the country. Before Saturdays game, Beckham and the Galaxy will hold a football clinic with children from poor communities in Manila. "We always try to play diplomatic football ... but we want to win. It doesnt matter if its a friendly, we want to win the game," he said. Wholesale Jerseys . SURPRISE, Ariz. Cheap Jerseys From China . -- Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez will have surgery on his left knee to repair a lateral meniscus tear. Perez will likely be out several weeks. The surgery will determine the severity of the cartilage tear and how much time he will miss. Perez injured his knee while warming up starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez in the bullpen before a 7-5 victory Tuesday over the Cincinnati Reds. Perez caught the first inning but left with a noticeable limp and was replaced by Cody Clark. He was on crutches in the Royals clubhouse Wednesday and was set return to Kansas City for further examinations. A MRI on Tuesday night revealed the tear. "Heading to KC today - Thanks to all the fans for the support. I will work hard to be back as soon as possible. God bless you," Perez tweeted Wednesday morning. workouts before returning to practice at the start of training camp

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. Jerseys From China . -- Injured Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher expects to be ready for the regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Urlacher has left knee pain and has not practiced since July 31. He had not talked about his injury situation until Sunday. "September 9 Ill be ready to play," he said. "Im pretty sure. Thats really all that matters to me. Urlacher sprained his medial collateral ligament and partially sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in the Bears regular-season finale against Minnesota. There was no need for surgery, and he rehabbed the injury throughout the teams off-season workouts before returning to practice at the start of training camp. "Preseason games and all these practices, Id love to be out there, but Im not going to put myself in jeopardy and miss the first game," Urlacher said. "I practiced the first four or five days and it felt pretty good and it got sore and a little swollen. So Im taking some time off right now." He did not set a timetable for a return to practice, and said he did not seek an outside opinion on the knee. "Its hard to tell with an injury like I had what causes (the pain) and why its doing this," he said. Without Urlacher, the Bears (No. 11 tie in the APPro32) have turned to strong side linebacker Nick Roach playing in the middle. The eight-time Pro Bowl player had left training camp last week for two days and also was not on the sideline at the preseason opener against Denver on Thursday for what coach Lovie Smith termed, "personal reasons, unrelated" to the knee soreness. On Sunday, Urlacher would not comment further on the personal reasons he left camp. Ultimately, Urlacher is hopeful the knee will be pain-free and not a problem that must be managed throughout the regular season. "I hope its 100 (per cent)," he said. "I mean, I felt great coming into training camp." Smith remains upbeat about Urlachers status. "If a guy isnt practicing I wouldnt say that its zero," Smith said about his concern level. "But beyond that, I dont know. I just know that I feel pretty comfortable about him playing this year and eventually well get him out on the football field when he needs to be before we play the Colts." HOUSTON -- Michael Cuddyer is still recovering from being plunked in the right forearm a couple of days ago, which makes doing many things uncomfortable. Luckily for the Colorado Rockies, swinging hardly hurts him at all. Cuddyer had three hits, including an RBI single in the ninth inning that gave Colorado a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros in interleague play on Tuesday. "Its sore. Theres no question its sore and swollen," Cuddyer said. "But fortunately the way I got hit the one thing that really doesnt bother me is swinging. Pretty much everything else, it doesnt feel great but swinging I dont really feel it all that much. I got really lucky in that sense." Troy Tulowitzki doubled off Houston closer Jose Veras (0-4) to start the ninth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Cuddyer followed with his single, which sailed just out of reach of leaping third baseman Matt Dominguez. "It doesnt surprise me with Cuddy," manager Walt Weiss said. "Hes always looking to answer the bell. Hes a great pro. Twenty-four hours ago I wasnt sure that hed be playing this early, but hes going to find a way to get in the lineup." Tulowitzki had an RBI single in the first. Chris Carter tied it in the fourth with an RBI grounder. Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa scattered five hits with one run over seven innings. He had won his previous four starts and finished the month 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Matt Belisle (2-2) threw a perfect eighth for the win. Closer Rafael Betancourt struck out two in the ninth for his 11th save. Houston starter Jordan Lyles yielded six hits and one run in a season-long seven innings. Wesley Wright took over and struck out two in a scoreless eighth before he was replaced by Veras. Manager Bo Porter was impressed with the work of his 22-year-old pitcher. "Jordan Lyles -- today is what you would call graduation," Porter said. "I think hes learned from his time last year. I think hes learned from early on this year, and he was able to make quality pitches to get himself out of some tough jams and got the big strikeout when he needed it." The Rockies won late a day after Houston got a 3-2 victory in 12 innings. "The bottom line is we found a way to win a game and thats huge," Weiss said. MLB Jerseys China. A one-out single by Tulowitzki put Colorado ahead. Fowler walked again to begin the third. Arenado reached on a forceout and eventually reached third, but was caught at the plate when shortstop Ronny Cedeno made a nice catch on Tulowitzkis fly and threw home. "Thats a great play. Not only the catch but the wherewithal to get rid of the ball at the speed at which he got rid of the ball and the accuracy of the throw," Porter said. "So, if thats in the Olympics youre judging it a 10." The Rockies had another chance to add onto their lead in the fourth when they loaded the bases with no outs. But Colorado came up empty when Lyles struck out Yorvit Torrealba and DJ LeMahieu grounded into a double play to end the inning. "Im just trying to get outs, really," Lyles said. "Just trying to put up good outing and not let our bullpen throw too many innings. Im just trying to do my job." De La Rosa hit two batters in the fourth. ST. Wholesale Broncos Jerseys . LOUIS -- Jake Westbrook bounded out of the dugout for the ninth inning before manager Mike Matheny could change his mind. The right-hander quickly finished off a five-hitter for his first shutout in more than six years, backed by four home runs in the St. Louis Cardinals 10-0 rout over the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday. "He was making a statement," Matheny said. "He wanted to make sure he gave the appearance he was ready to go. What a great day for him." Westbrook (1-1) hasnt allowed an earned run in 15 2-3 innings this season, although he took the loss on an unearned run in a 1-0 setback to Barry Zito in San Francisco in his season debut. He relied heavily on a sinker against the Reds with 16 groundball outs. "It always means a lot when you can finish what you started," Westbrook said. "The ball was in the zone and really moving a lot. I guess I know when Im good is when I get a lot of ground balls." The lineup made a statement, too. Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams homered in a span of seven at-bats off Homer Bailey as the Cardinals took two of three from the NL Central champions after Cincinnati stunned them with a nine-run ninth in the home opener. "Its a great point about resiliency," Matheny said. "They certainly showed a different brand the last two days." Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer on a four-hit day. Adams homered for the second straight game and added an RBI double and walk. The Cardinals have dominated the Reds at home the last decade, losing just three of 28 series with two splits. They outscored them 15-1 the last two games of the series and the Reds were shut out for the first time in the finale. "I was hoping this would be different this time especially after that first night," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "The thing about it is their pitching really shut us down." Westbrook (1-1) pitched his first shutout since Aug. 9, 2006, against the Angels when he was with Cleveland, and this was his 15th career complete game. He held the Reds hitless in six at-bats with runners in scoring position, and contributed his 11th career RBI with a single in the seventh for St. Louis final run. "It was a perfect storm," said Joey Votto, one of the few Reds with much success, going 2 for 3 with a walk. "He didnt surprise us because he definitely has that capability." Bailey (1-1) had gone 23 straight shutout innings -- including his no-hitter against Pittsburgh last season -- before the Cardinals broke open a scoreless game with four runs with two outs in the fifth. "Once they started seeing the ball there toward the end, they hit it," Bailey said. "After watching the film, I missed a spot to Beltran pretty big. The others hit pretty good pitches. They just got ahold of them." Bailey was charged with seven runs in five-plus innings and dropped to 3-8 with a 5.52 ERA against the Cardinals, including 0-4 with a 6.93 ERA at Busch Stadium. Baker pulled Bailey after Pete Kozmas liner struck the pitcher just above his right ankle, with the ball caroming into left field. But Bailey walked off without a limp. "I was trying to wave him off," Bailey said. "It was more because of giving up the rockets that havent really landed yet." The Cardinals advanced only two runners into scoring position in the first four innings and Bailey got two quick outs to start the fifth before running into trouble against the top of the lineup. St. Louis scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh off Bailey, Logan Ondrusek and Alfredo Simon. Jays second homer just cleared centre fielder Shin-Soo Choos leaping attempt at the wall. Carpenter followed with a single and Matt Holliday hit an RBI double, prompting a visit from pitching coach Bryan Price. Beltran then hit his first homer of the season on to make it 4-0. Adams hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Bailey. Carpenters two-run shot homer three batters later made it 8-0. NOTES: Jay has 19 career homers, six of them against the Reds. ... The agent for Detroit cornerback Chris Houston says the player has also agreed to a new deal that will keep him with the Lions. Jones, who is from the Detroit area, played 12 games with the Seattle Seahawks last season. He was not a starter, but the 6-foot-5, 276-pound Jones could play a bigger role with the Lions, who may lose defensive end Cliff Avril to free agency. He posted his first shutout a week ago, and collected another victory last week despite allowing five goals. The only constant through his first six starts is a string of victories for the Anaheim Ducks. Fasth made two stops in the shootout to remain perfect and the Ducks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Tuesday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Conference. "You always try to work hard to get to play," said Fasth, who signed with Anaheim in May. "I got to work hard every day to get my chances and to play when the coach wants me to play and try to help out the team as much as I can." After Jonathan Toews converted the first shootout attempt for Chicago, Fasth stopped Patrick Kanes backhander and denied Brandon Saad on the right side of the goal to become the first goalie to win his first six NHL starts since Dan Ellis with Dallas and Nashville from Feb. 18, 2004, to Nov. 29, 2007. Nick Bonino and Corey Perry scored in the tiebreaker for Anaheim, which improved to 3-1 on its season-high, six-game road trip. Ryan Getzlaf and Andrew Cogliano scored in regulation, and Fasth had 28 stops through overtime. "Theyre obviously a great team," the 30-year-old goaltender said. "We knew that we had to be on top of our game to win today and thats what we did." Brandon Saad and Nick Leddy had the goals for Chicago, which remained the only NHL team without a regulation loss. Corey Crawford made 29 saves in the first home game for the Blackhawks in two weeks. "We were in a position to win that game," Crawford said. "We played well. Its tough to lose another one in the shootout like that." Chicago was in front 2-1 before Cogliano sent a deflected shot into the left side of the net with 2:40 left in the third after he had his helmet knocked off. It was the second goal in the last two games for Cogliano, and his second on the year. "The first 15 minutes of the third period they played such a solid defensive game and we werent getting any opportunities," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "But sometimes when you believe, it only takes once chance and we got the one chance and we put it in." The Blackhawkss (10-0-3) were on the power play for almost four minutes in overtime but couldnt get the winning goal.dddddddddddd. Fasth made a nice stop on Patrick Sharps slap shot and a glove save on Marian Hossa. "It was a tough game," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "They played hard, we worked hard, and werent at our best, but deserved what we got." Getzlaf put the Ducks in front with a power-play goal in the second, but the momentum shifted after Chicago forward Bryan Bickell levelled Getzlaf midway through the period. Brad Staubitz immediately jumped on Bickell to defend his teammate. He got a few punches in before Bickell took him to the ice, and the Blackhawks quickly jumped on Fasth for a pair of goals in their first home game since a 2-1 victory over Detroit on Jan. 27. With Staubitz in the box serving an instigating penalty, Leddy sent a slap shot off the right post and into the goal for his second of the season at 10:17. Saad then came down and sent a leaping wrister toward Fasth as he was going to the ice. The puck went off Fasths left shoulder and started trickling down his back. Luca Sbisa went to the ice to try to stop it from crossing the line as players both teams flocked into the goalmouth. After a lengthy replay review, the officials announced the puck had crossed the line before the goal was knocked off its posts. As the Blackhawks celebrated Saads second of the year, Boudreau listened to an explanation from the referees. "God only knows," Boudreau said after the game. "They must have a better view. On the thing, you can see that it went in. I just dont know if the intent to blow the whistle was there, or was it over the line completely before the peg came out." It looked as if that goal would be the difference until Cogliano tied it up in the third. He also scored in Anaheims 6-5 shootout win at St. Louis on Saturday. NOTES: F Daniel Carcillo skated again Tuesday morning, and Quenneville said he might able to practice with the Blackhawks this week. Carcillo hasnt played since he injured his right knee in the season opener against the Kings ... Ducks G Jonas Hiller also skated Tuesday and remains day to day with a lower-body injury. ... HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros knew they werent going to win much this season, so with an eye toward the future they cast off their few pricey veterans before the trade deadline, slashing payroll and restocking their depleted farm system. Cheap Jerseys . It wasnt a blueprint to win now. Still, new owner Jim Crane didnt think it would be this bad. The Astros have shed almost $40 million from their opening day roster and have a payroll of just $21.3 million as of last week. Nine players on other teams will make more than that by themselves this season, led by Alex Rodriguez ($30 million). Francisco Cordero and Jed Lowrie, two of Houstons three highest-paid players, are on the disabled list. That leaves Ben Francisco as the only active player making more than $750,000. Houston has had the worst record in baseball for most of the season. But things devolved rapidly since the Astros rebuilding effort began in earnest when general manager Jeff Luhnow traded Carlos Lee on July 4. Monday nights 7-1 loss at Chicago left them 6-36 since the Lee trade, including a franchise-worst 12-game losing skid. Houston is the first National League team to lose 34 games in a 38-game span since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, according to STATS LLC, a skid that ended last Friday. "We made a lot of trades and once we made that decision -- Jeff started moving some of the talent -- we knew we might slide back a little bit, but we didnt think it would be this bad," Crane said. After Lee, Houston shed pitchers J.A. Happ, Brandon Lyon, David Carpenter, Brett Myers and Wandy Rodriguez before wrapping up a busy month by sending third baseman Chris Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Some of them, had they gone beyond the trade deadline, we wouldnt have gotten much of anything," Crane said. "I think (Luhnow) got as much as he possibly could. (He) traded hard, and we did pick up a lot of great prospects." Houston received 15 players in the recent trades. Its talent that has improved a minor league system many believed was among the worst in baseball heading into the season. "Our objective is to be competitive consistently as soon as possible," Luhnow said. "And being able to infuse as many prospects into our system as we were able to at the A and Double-A level, you dont have an opportunity to do that in the draft. You get a lot of new prospects in the draft, but theyre usually at the rookie-ball level." Of course, Houstons focus on the future didnt just begin this season. Stars including Lance Berkman, Roy Oswalt, Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn all have been dealt in the last two seasons. Of Houstons top 20 minor league prospects, 10 are a product of this years deals along with the Bourn and Pence trades. Right-hander Jarred Cosart and third baseman Matt Dominguez, both acquired in trades and playing at Triple-A, are considered Houstons second- and fourth-best prospects. Their greatest area of need was pitching and the recent deals brought several new arms. The moves will also give the Astros some flexibility to add talent in the off-season. "Next year with a lot of those salaries gone, well have some room to fill in some players when we see what we ended up with," Crane said. "Youll see some more players coming up at the end of the year, and we will continue to see who can play at the big league level." Luhnow said he knows its difficult for fans to get excited about the team as it stands now, but he believes it was the only way for Houston to be successful later. "Trading our veteran players was the most effective way to (gain talent)," Luhnow said. "While short-term its certainly a loss in terms of what they were able to do on the field, I think in the medium- and long-term its going to be a real benefit for us. So that was the objective going into it and with every trade, we had that in mind." Houstons struggles this season, which include the leagues worst road mark along with the worst overall record, have been hard on everyone in the organization, perhaps none more manager Brad Mills. "When we first got here it was kind of a slow transition, now all of the sudden with the new regime changes and things we decided: Lets do the whole thing now," said Mills, who is in his third season in Houston. "It definitely puts things in a situation where wins are tougher because youre dealing with a lot of inexperienced individuals." In managing the youngest team in the National League, Mills has struggled to help his team find consistency. He has tried to teach the players that doing all the little things right will eventually add up to more wins. He has found he doesnt have to say anything different as the losses piled up. "They understand where were going and what were getting to and its easy to see and they want to put themselves in a position to be aboard when we move forward," Mills said. "And I think thats a big, motivating factor in itself. To be with the ballclub when it moves forward." Indeed, a number of players on the roster are likely to be part of Houstons future as the Astros move to the AL West next season. A key piece is second baseman Jose Altuve, who was named to his first All-Star team this season. The diminutive 22-year-old entered Monday hitting .299 with 128 hits, 30 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. Brett Wallace is another player the Astros believe will help turn things around. He has alternated between Triple-A and Houston this season, but looks to be up for good now and is hitting .307. Houston also has seen improvement from young starting pitchers Dallas Keuchel, Jordan Lyles and Lucas Harrell. Luhnows hope is that fans will learn about the up-and-coming players and enjoy watching them develop as major leaguers. "The next generation of stars are in our minor league system and theyre starting to get here to the big leagues, guys like Altuve," Luhnow said. "And those are the guys that were going to build around and hopefully increase the connection between the fans and those players, so that when we are back in a position to compete for titles, that they feel they know those players and have an affiliation with them." The Astros nabbed Puerto Rican shortstop Carlos Correa, whom they believe can become the face of the franchise, with the top pick in the draft and right-hander Lance McCullers with a first-round compensation pick. Theyll almost certainly have the No. 1 pick again as they head for their second-straight 100-loss season after finishing a franchise-worst 56-106 last year. Houston hasnt had a winning season since 2008. Crane, a former athlete turned shipping magnate, hopes things turn around soon. "Were certainly optimistic that speed can come into the program," he said. "When you look at Oakland, they werent supposed to be able to compete for a few years, and they are running after a wild card, with a similar situation. ... The good thing about our situation is well have a lot more money than they will at the end of the day, so we should be able to build." Coming off a victory last week in the Boise Open, he earned $99,000 to jump from fourth to first on the money list with $382,463. The final top 25 on the list will earn 2013 PGA Tour cards. "I probably should have pulled a 3-wood off the tee," he said. "And not hit driver." Guthrie had 146 yards to hole and punched an 8-iron under the trees. The ball bounced in, then out of the front, greenside bunker and nestled in the rough. His pitch came up short, setting up the 12-footer. "Biggest clutch putt as a professional," Guthrie said. "I misjudged the chip. Even if I hit it perfect it was going to wind up a good 5 feet short. Theres a little ridge there and I had inside left edge. It wiggled a little bit right just before the hole, but snuck in the right side." Hes juggling golf with school, finishing up 13 credits for his business degree. "I missed my flight home, so it looks like Ill miss class again tomorrow," Guthrie said. "Im going to meet with the teacher and catch up on my homework but then head to Chicago for the weekend." MIAMI -- Ross Detwiler departed with a lead for the third start in a row Wednesday night, and this time the bullpen held on as Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 6-1. Cheap NFL Jerseys . Harper, back in the Nationals lineup after missing one game with the flu, hiked his average to .364 with four hits and improved to 9 for 20 against Ricky Nolasco. Harper hit two solo homers off Nolasco on opening day. Detwiler (1-0) allowed one run in seven innings, which increased his ERA to 0.90. He left his first two starts with the Nationals ahead 5-1 and 4-1, but both times received no decision. Tyler Clippard and Rafael Soriano pitched one perfect inning apiece to close out the seven-hitter. Kurt Suzuki hit his second home run, tripled and had a sacrifice fly. Adam LaRoche had two hits to improve his average to .195. The Nationals, who took two of three games from the Marlins, have won only four of 19 series in Miami since the beginning of 2007. This year Washington is 5-1 against the Marlins and has outscored them 29-13. Nolasco, by far the Marlins highest-paid player at $11.5 million, allowed four runs in six innings. The Marlins have scored five runs in his four starts. Austin Kearns had two hits in his first start for Miami since being hospitalized briefly for an irregular heartbeat. But Miami went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position. The Marlins finished a nine-game homestand with the worst record in the majors at 3-12. Theyre also last in the majors in runs (32) and homers (three). Slugger Giancarlo Stanton sat out for the sixth consecutive game because of a bruised left shoulder, but hes expected to rejoin the lineup Thursday in Cincinnati. Another bright spot for the Marlins: Announced attendance was 22,302. Despite the teams dismal start, crowds have been larger than many expected in the wake of off-season moves that angered fans. The Nationals took the lead in the second, when they scored twice. LaRoche and Ian Desmond singled, Roger Bernadina had an RBI groundout and Suzuki followed with a sacrifice fly. Suzuki homered on a 3-2 pitch leading off the fifth. Harper doubled and scored on LaRoches single in the sixth to make it 4-1. The Marlins scored a disputed run in the fifth, when Chris Valaika doubled and came home on a two-out single by Donovan Solano. It appeared Suzuki tagged the sliding Valaika just before he touched the plate, and umpire Greg Gibson began to signal out before changing his call to safe. Washington manager Davey Johnson briefly argued. No worries. The Thunders star player is always contributing. Durant scored 20 points to lead an efficient offence in Oklahoma Citys 103-80 rout of the Wizards, snapping a two-game losing streak to Washington. The Thunders so-called "Big Three" -- Durant, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Martin -- combined for 59 points on just 27 shots and the Thunder led by double digits for most of the second half. Oklahoma City remains 1 1/2 games behind San Antonio for the top spot in the Western Conference after the Spurs held on to beat the Denver Nuggets 100-99. "Shots are going to come around for me," Durant said. "Points are going to come around for me. It was balanced tonight. . Who cares? We won the basketball game. Im happy for our guys coming out and responding after us losing to them." Durant was the only Oklahoma City player to reach double figures in shots. Westbrook, who scored 21 points, did so on eight field goal attempts, while Martin, who had 18 points, took nine shots. Oklahoma City shot 46 per cent from the field and went 37-of-41 from the free throw line, compared to 32.1 per cent (21-of-29) for the Wizards. Durant hit all 10 of his free throws and Westbrook was 10-of-11 at the line. "When you dont have to take the ball out of the net, you get an opportunity to use your athleticism and get out in transition," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "We were really good with that. Were fast. Our first three steps can get down to half-court pretty quick and then we put pressure on the defence. Its all about defending. Its all about rebounding and getting out on the break." Washington had taken its previous two games against Oklahoma City, winning the only meeting during the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season before a 101-99 victory in Washington on Jan. 7 -- the second played without point guard John Wall. Wall, coming off 47 points in a win over Memphis, overcame 3-of-18 shooting to finish with 18 points and 12 assists, but he had limited help. Numerous injuries and illness left the Wizards with only eight players in uniform. Washington was missing Trevor Ariza (flu), Leandro Barbosa (torn left knee ligament), Bradley Beal (sprained left ankle), Nene (sore right knee), Martell Webster (abdominal strain) and A.J. Price (sort right groin). "I was as proud of these guys tonight as I was our last game against Memphis," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "Its not about your wins and losses. Its about how you play. We went out tonight with eight guys and a lot of our key guys down and we battled. "We didnt have a good shooting night and this is a good team. If you get them to the free-throw linne 41 times on top of that, its hard to beat them.dddddddddddd" The Thunder trailed briefly during the opening four minutes and the Wizards hung close for a while. Wall, despite shooting 1-of-11 from the field, still almost had a double-double by halftime, hitting eight of 11 free throws for 10 points to go with nine assists. An early 8-0 run put Oklahoma City up 10-5 and the Thunder never trailed again. The Thunder built their lead to 45-34 after two free throws by Westbrook with 4:57 left in the first half and was up 53-45 at halftime. Westbrook had 15 points at halftime. Consecutive 3-pointers by Westbrook and Thabo Sefolosha put Oklahoma City ahead 70-54 with 7:20 left in the third quarter and the Wizards never cut the margin to single digits the rest of the way. "We just couldnt get anybody hot," Wittman said. Oklahoma City has won nine of its last 10 home games and in the nine victories theyve won by an average of 22 points. "I like the way were moving the ball," Durant said. "I like the way were helping each other out on defence and talking. If we can keep that up no matter what, well be fine. Right now, I know we love to win basketball games, but its about bettering our habits. Theres 10 games left and we want to continue playing sound, solid defence, moving the ball on offence and going out there and wreaking havoc, getting steals and getting blocked shots and try to get some easy points." Garrett Temple scored 13 points for the Wizards, while Cartier Martin and Kevin Seraphin each had 12 and Trevor Booker 10. Kendrick Perkins had 11 rebounds for the Thunder and Emeka Okafor grabbed 10. Notes: Among those in attendance was Oklahoma State basketball coach Travis Ford, who had one of the nations top freshmen this season in Marcus Smart. Smart hasnt declared yet if hell enter the upcoming NBA draft. Ford spoke briefly with Thunder general manager Sam Presti . Wittman, an Indiana product, was critical of former Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson before the game. When asked about the Hoosiers success thus far in the NCAA tournament, Wittman called it "really gratifying" and said Indiana has recovered from NCAA sanctions imposed for violations that occurred during Sampsons time as coach. Wittman said Indiana had "a rich tradition that was built up over 30, 40, 50 years and in the matter of 18 months, it was torn completely down." Sampson is now an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets . Washington has won 14 games this season against Western Conference foes, the most for the Wizards since winning 14 during the 2006-07 season . The Thunder recorded their 51st straight regular-season sellout at Chesapeake Energy Arena, with 37 of those this season . Backup guard Derek Fisher scored two points in 14 minutes of action for Oklahoma City, his first points in five games. ' ' '
